UK Online Casino Statistics 2026: The Complete Data Report

UK online casino statistics: market size (2025–2026)
Great Britain runs one of the largest regulated online gambling markets in the world. According to the UK Gambling Commission’s official industry statistics, the remote (online) sector — casino, betting and bingo combined — produced £5.55 billion in gross gambling yield (GGY) across 2025. GGY is the amount operators keep after paying out winnings, so it is the truest measure of the industry’s scale.
Online casino gaming is the single biggest slice. In the final quarter of 2025 it generated £1.49 billion — around 70% of all remote GGY in that period. Growth has continued into 2026: online GGY for January–March 2026 reached £1.55 billion, up 7% on the same quarter a year earlier.
How Britain gambles online
The Gambling Commission’s Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB), its largest official participation study, found that 47% of adults had gambled in the previous four weeks. Crucially, online has overtaken the high street: 37% gambled online versus 27% in person.
The 2025 regulation crackdown
2025 brought the biggest tightening of online-slot rules in the market’s history. Statutory stake limits now apply to every UK-licensed casino:
- £5 maximum per spin for players aged 25 and over — in force from 9 April 2025.
- £2 maximum per spin for players aged 18–24 — in force from 21 May 2025.
These sit alongside other Gambling Commission rules that shape how UK slots must behave: a minimum 2.5-second spin speed, and a ban on both ‘bonus-buy’ (feature-buy) mechanics and autoplay. Together they make UK slot play materially slower and lower-stake than in unregulated markets — one reason UKGC-licensed sites differ from offshore operators.
Safer gambling: the numbers
The safer-gambling picture improved in 2025. The GSGB recorded the problem-gambling rate falling to 2.4%, down from 2.7% a year earlier — the first drop since the survey began — though that still represents an estimated 1.3 million people, with a further 3.5% classed as moderate-risk.
Use of the national self-exclusion scheme hit record highs. GamStop passed 562,000 registrations by the end of 2025, adding more than 117,000 in the year — a 19% annual rise. The sharpest growth was among young adults: registrations from 16–24-year-olds rose 40% in the second half of 2025, and that age group made up 29% of all new sign-ups.
What this means for UK players
The data tells a consistent story: online is now the dominant way Britain gambles, the market keeps growing, and regulation is tightening around player protection rather than loosening. For players, the practical takeaways are that every legitimate operator you use should be UK Gambling Commission-licensed, that stake and speed limits are now legal requirements (not optional features), and that free tools such as GamStop are being used by record numbers of people.
